Artistic Inspiration:
- My self portrait piece "The Tree of Light" was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh called Almond Blossom which feels quite like a delicate piece and is very naturral like. Another piece I used for my inspriation is the blending technique from the Baroque style, making sure that my who piece has nice smooth transitions in color. An example of a baroque style piece would be Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi. I incrporated Van Gogh piece into my background of my portrait while including he blending technique into my face.
Process:
Planning Sketches:
- I created three planning sketches to chose from and develop my ideas.
Experimenting:

Painting Process:First when making my piece I had to gather all the materials I needed to strech my own canvas. This involved me to staple my 3 foot by 3 foot wooden frame together with my canvas. Then after my canvas was put together I applied a layer of gesso to my canvas. I applied my gesso with my canvas on a easel because my canvas on the easel allowed me to be able to see that I covered my whole canvas so that its doesn't warp. Then after the gesso was dry I applied my background color onto my canvas, using different shades of blue. Then I used he grid method and outlined my face. After I was finished drawing out my face I applied my paint. Once I was finished with my whole face and body, I started working on details and doing my background which was part of my inspiration. Using white fr the flowers made my eyes in the self portrait stand out.

Reflection:When doing my self portrait I learned more about my skills and what I am able to achieve while painting. In my piece there was a lot of layers that was involved. Due to my backgfound being blue, I had to apply a layer on my base skin tone onto my face so that the blue wouldn't have shown through. I thought that I did well at painting my hair and adding enough detail, making my hair look like there is more depth in it. I also thought that I did well on my background, adding enough detail to my braches and petals on the flowers. What I found that was a struggle to do was adding more value onto my face. Incorporating enough paint to have a smooth blend of color, having a gradientation when adding more contrast to my face. Something that I would like to do for next time is paint my necklaces that I have on instead of just the chain to add more detail and design onto that specific area. At the end of my piece I found that I was mostly successful at including my artist inspriation and incorporating enough detail.
Critique:My piece "The Tree of Light" share similar qualities with my inspiration Vicent Van Gogh and artwork.
In my piece I included a piece by Vicent Van Gogh called Almond Blossom, in which I used in my background of my piece. I tried my best to include as much detail as possible when working on the branches and petals of the flowers. My piece also connects to the Baroque style and there blending technique. I used the Baroque technique when painting my face, making sure that my face blends smoothly together. Overall I believe that my piece represent my inspiration quite well, showing both of Van Goghs work as well as including the Baroque blending style. |
Meaning:
The meaning of The Tree of Light is a new start. The piece connects to the thought of letting go of the negatives and only focusing on the positives. Once making my frame I decided on doing my inspriation on Almond Blossom by Vicent Van Gogh by making my backgroung blue and adding several shades of other blues. The Almond Blossom tree in the back ground of my piece is a symbol of something new, such as a fresh start. An Almond Blossom tree is a spirtual symbol, in which connects back to the bible. The Almond Blossom tree is why my piece is named The Tree of Light, believing in a new bright future and leaving all the negatives in the past. For my self portrait I decided to use use the inspriation of an Almond Blossom tree because I tend to have that might set of staying positive and focusin on the future rather than dwelling on negative events.
Connecting to ACT
1. Identify cause and effect relationships between your inspiration and your artwork.
In my piece I included my inspiration of Vicent Van Gogh because the background of my piece is based off of Almond Blossom. I also based my piece off of the Baroque blending style in which I included into the blending of my face.
2. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The movement od post impressionism focuses on brighter colors and personal experiences based off the artist. Vincent Van Gogh focuses on connecting with the viewer through memories and emotions.
3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I made a generalization about post impressionism artists thinking they focus more on duller colors when instead I found out that they work with brighter colors and focusing on a more personal meaning.
4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
My centeral theme aroung my inspriation was the emotional concept of having starting new and believeing in a postive future. I found that post- impressionism artist focus on meomories and emotions.
5. What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
Some inferences I made while conducting my research was the little details that mean the most and incorporating lots of detail into your work draws more attention to it and being able to provide a stronger connection to the piece.
